My guess is that your pin is rhodium-plated fine metal...either white gold or sterling silver.  Look at the beautiful workmanship on the underside of the pin, such care on the finish, the look of the soldered joints etc. is a sign pointing to the likelihood that the metal is of the precious variety.

Yes, I see now that it is a cluster of grapes. Really unique and nice, has a look of vintage style (circa 1950 - 1960 is my guess).

Thanks Geena, that sounds about right.
Also i just figured out that if i blast the jewelry with way too much light i can take macro photos without the flash and the pics come out correct.  I used our two reading lamps above our bed to light these pics, and it's so strong the sparklies are warm after a few shots.   Undecided

Jen - i forgot to say that R3291 was sooo close to my first DBL purchase, if i didn't have my cheapo huggies i got for a steal i probably would have gone with them instead of Bunny.  They're still high on my list of DBL Necessary Purchases.

"Instead of" is such a horrible concept here. I really think we need to start a CDI lottery syndicate so we can all replace 'instead of' with 'as well as... and throw in a couple of pinks while you're at it...'  Grin

Love your opal. My father grew up in a coal mining town in Scotland and went to a mining school - the boy he sat next to at school emigrated to Australia to open an opal mine. WHY did my father not think to do that? They are so beautiful!

I finally got a chance to meet with my MIL while wearing Bunny today and she loved her!  I just have to thank David again for doing such amazing work, I'm super excited to continue working with him on my MIL's piece.  I think she's decided on a three stone with trilliants, pears or hearts.  Cheesy

Beautiful pearls, SV.

But you had to do it, didn't you - just HAD to bring out those opals.  Now my tongue is stuck to mydesk and I can't move my head.

Srsly, beautiful collection.  I also have a soft spot for opals, and yours are beautiful.  A joy to see them, again.

And Bunny sits there looking like she's already happy in her new home.  A lovely new addition, for sure!

Remember I told you guys I gave my sister our mother's 1.5ishctw brown yellow diamond earrings for her birthday?  Well she knows I like pearls, so randomly she sent me these earrings.  My sister's the coolest.  They're 14k gold, and I can't tell if they're fresh water or south sea.  I took some comparison shots, the necklace on the left is freshwater, and the ring/pendant on the right are Tahitian.  Any ideas?

My bet is Tahiti - the mounts look old (early 1960s?), and I think black freshwater pearls of any size have only been around for 15-20 years at most. But I'm no expert.

I have no idea about the pearls.  I like them, but I know nothing about them.

They are pretty though.  What an awesome sister you have!

Thank OMC, the woman at the estate sale told my sister they were from Tahiti, but she was just the woman working the estate sale, not the actual owner.

I would love a pearl necklace like what you have.  I would love to find a smaller set since I am a short & petite girl.  I just love the color of darker pearls.  So far the only set I have is more of a pearl by the yard in ivory set on white gold.  I have some freshwater pearls to match and that's it.

Your sister does rock though!  I am not sure my sister even knows about my new ring yet.  We're just not close.

My sister and I are 7 1/2 years apart (she's older), and we fought like crazy when we were younger, but she moved out of the house when she was 16 (genius graduated highschool and started college then), and our relationship simmered down a bit.  But then she moved to Cali when she was 19 (graduated again), so I was 11 when she left and I only saw her a few times a year, if that, from then on.  It was really after she'd left the state for a few years before she and I really started talking and liking each other.  She's one of the coolest people I know.  But we still can't spend extended periods of time together, we get along great, but we still have a fiery relationship.  To her credit I think she knows how to push every family members buttons just right, she's not mean, but maybe a little aspergers.

Oh, and the pearl necklace, is it okay if I say I got them on ebay? dontknow  I found out the cheapest way to buy freshwater pearls is from China, the big banded freshwater strand I got on ebay looks to me like a lot of Tahitian necklaces I see in jewelry stores that go for $1k and more.  I talked to a seller on ebay who agreed to turn a 100" strand of pearls into 5 20" necklaces for me and just divide the cost per each, so with shipping, I got that necklace for $10.   I gave the other 4 to important women in my life as xmas presents, and they all thought i'd gone crazy and spent a fortune on them.  Wink

Hey ebay is a wonderful thing!  I've found some great deals on items there.  Where else can you find a vintage ring for $125?  I've been tempted to buy some of these funky looking stones I've seen on there too for fun.

I ought to look to see if I can find a smaller strand there.  That way I won't feel too bad if it doesn't look right on me.

That is great that your sister and you get along great (when apart) now.  My sister and I are about a year apart in age and that has never helped.  She's always been highly competative with me on everything so that makes it rough.  We live in the same state, but different cities.  She really knows how to push my buttons though and I appreciate my husband for helping me to deal with her better.  He keeps saying that she's constantly jealous of me due to me doing lots of things first socially (dating, driving, marriage, house kids etc) but I am not sure I believe it or not.  Just makes it tough.  I have another sibling that I get along with wonderfully though so that makes up for some of it.

Those aren't opals.   tongue2  Those are just poor memories of what might be.  SV's Grandmama has shown us the real deal.

saori.... the easiest way to tell the difference between frshwater pearls and south sea pearls is mostly the size...... ss pearls are almost always 12mm or more while freshwater are almost always 12mm and under. also, the lustre, because ss pearls take 1-2 yrs to cultivate, while FW takes a few months. I read all about it and emailed Diadiva (or forum pearl expert) before leaving for China. I was hoping to buy some FW pearls while there, but never really had time to shop for them. i bought 1 piece of nice jade and a whole lot of silk instead...........

Thanks Saq!  I've heard people use South Sea and Tahitian interchangeably.  Can they be the same?  I know the golden SS pearls are deep sea, grow very slowly, and are wicked expensive and rare.  Peacock Tahitians are different right?  I know that my Tahitian set are real, but I'd say they are probably 9-10 mm, and are perfectly round.  My new earrings however, seem a touch bigger than my ring and necklace, but are a also slightly oblong.  My two bigger necklaces, 10-12mm pearls are both freshwater.
I just cleaned the new earrings with baby shampoo and they have much better luster!  Cheesy

though not strictly jewelry, i love this guy so much.  he is made up of fire opals, jelly opals and onyx. i guess grandma got him when she lived in mexico, turtles and frogs are some of my favorite creatures.  Smiley

SV - you have got to check this out.  I like yours better because the opals are larger, but Holy Moly!  The price!  freakout
