One thing I admit I like about David's photographs is that they seem real to me.  I do photography as a hobby and while some of my equipment is old (or broken... sniff on my macro lens) I still appreciate a photograph that looks real and like it is showing how something really looks.

I hang out on the other place and my only issue is that if anyone says they prefer to use their eyes for some purchases you are considered nuts.  The focus on ideal cut rounds is kind of annoying to me as I don't really like round cuts (except for my earrings).  I like different colors and shapes so many times I have to use eyes to decide.  I think that's why they like to pick on DBL.  I think they truly believe that if you don't have all the numbers you are trying to hide something.  They are trying to compare tactics for buying an AGS0 round with all others.  Even with that, they probably thumb their noses at me because I didn't want an excellent cut diamond in my earrings because I didn't like how they looked.  H&A are so not my thing at all.

Now I haven't bought anything from DBL yet, but I am pretty sure when it comes time for me to get my dream ring I will be sending my DH this way.  I have bought a lot online from ebay and have trusted similar styles of photography to show me what I am buying.  So far so good because I trust my eyes.

I admit to having spent countless hours looking at all the gems and rings trying to decide what is my style.  I think I am close to getting it, and have saved links to rings and stones that I think I like.  Some day I will hand it over to my DH and say "pick like this" and see what he gets.  Though with our expenses coming up I doubt it will be anytime soon Sad

When I first found this site I thought I was in love with intense yellow diamonds.  Now I have realized I have a love for softer.  When I thought I loved a pricess it turns out I really like a squarish radiant.  And while I love asschers, unless in a halo I have decided I prefer them as accent stones or something more suble like a pendant.

I gotta say I love this place and I wish that some day I could see some of these items in person.  For now I rely on the pictures and I definitely appreciate the photos and videos out there.

So there's a ramble from a relative newbie here who has looked around a lot lately learning as much as she could Wink

i don't know how anyone could criticise david's photos. i agree with the above post that he takes many photos in different lighting ,angles, etc. what could be misleading about that? besides where else have you ever seen a diamond posted with the word booger used in the description??  Grin

I don't know if it's still there, but the thing that got me to call David was his pink diamond chart showing an "intensely ugly fancy intense pink" stone...

http://diamondsbylau...ndow_PinkRings.shtml Middle of the page there is a pink ring that is I2. It is not a lovely diamond and we say so.

You know we really don't cater to certain markets. Those who want a stone dropped in a peg head setting just don't know the difference and we're not their market. While we do appeal to a young crowd, our market skews a little older than that. It's the market that appreciates something more out of the ordinary without being off the charts weird.

We appeal to those who don't have to have 2 reports (not counting GIA) that could tell you what you could see with your eyes. Our customers don't need validation that the chunky cushion that is different or the super skinny vivid pear is the right choice for them. They just like it because it has personality and not standard issue. In short, you guys are not mainstream in your taste so you are drawn to classics with a twist. And you choose based on what speaks to you not what 3 of your girlfriends have on their hand.

So the photos appeal to our market. It works for us. It's not important for them to appeal to those who'd never buy from us because our jewelry is different from mainstream.

Good point Mistress.

Okay....here's my 2 cents.  David you know I love you right? LOL!

You also KNOW I love your photos and think they are spectacular...we've discussed this many times. So, let me say this....there is NOT one photo of anything I have purchased from you that wasn't 10 times nicer in real life than it was documented in a photo. Don't get me wrong, the photos are gorgeous but the diamond has always been nicer in person.

I don't care who you are, photographing a diamond is like capturing the color of an oil slick in a puddle on a cloudy day. Urgh.....but you come closer than anyone I know D. Really.

Have you been working out lately? Wow....you look great.   Exit-Stage-Right

For those of us who are over-the-moon in love with Dori's sensational new vivid yellow cushion ring, http://coloreddiamon...-ring/msg105813/#new , good news, there's another new beauty to moon over!

Recently, David posted a lighter colored twin to Dori's ring: check out 2.01ct Y-Z with half moons R2996, yummmmm. http://rockdiamond.c...iamond-gia-beautiful

So, David, I am wondering... looking at the side view for R2996, the setting work reminds me of diamond and sapphire ring R2864. Were the rings crafted by the same setter? Just curious. (Ummm, maybe it is all that TRICK photography you use... hehe.  icon_cyclops_ani )

R2684 1.17ct L OMC w/1.38ctw sapphire sides

Sorry I somehow missed this excellent question T!

Yes- they were made by the same people- great eye!
It's a really nice execution

just thinking out loud here, but i wonder if dori's vivid or the Y-Z sparkle more? that would be an interesting comparison for someone like me who has never seen or held both at the same time before.

David will correct me if I'm wrong but the lighter yellows sparkle more while the deeper colors wow you with their vividness.

And I can't tell you how long I've eyed that particular cushion. If I didn't need a car, it would be on my finger!
