Eeek! I just heard my oval rattle in it's Lucida setting. Unmistakable rattling sound even as I type this. What on earth have I done to it? I wear it all the time as a rhr, but I haven't knocked it or anything (that I'm aware of). It's been cleaned in the ultrasonic maybe seven or eight times since I got it and I've had it less than a year. I've had a careful look at the prongs and they aren't bent or broken or anything. It doesn't look as though it could possibly come out of the setting though - should I put it back in the box for now, to be on the safe side?

What did I do wrong?

Don't know what happened, but if it were I, I wouldn't wear it until I could get to the jeweler to have it checked.

Do you have a trustworthy jeweler nearby?

You would be surprised how easy it can be to have a stone loosen.  If you've lifted something heavy and compromised the back of the ring, that can have an effect on the prongs too.  Sometimes, a stone just shifts in the setting and becomes loose.  Just one of those things but I wouldn't wear it until it's tight again, Jen!

DO NOT WEAR IT . My Ritani came loose twice, and my local jeweler commented when I asked if it could 'go for the weekend'....."You wouldn't drive a car with bad brakes....the brakes are squealing". Don't wear it!

Thanks everyone, it's back in the box for now. There is only one jeweller I would trust with it now (since recent sapphire setting issues, long story) and he's quite a long way from where I live.

It will be worth the trip though - I have grown very, very attached to this ring.

DJ - lift something heavy? Uh, you might be confusing me with someone else... Grin

I do, occasionally. Shouldn't be frequent enough to cause a problem though. I'll take it with me next time I go into town and get it looked at.

Yeah MM, definitely put it up till you get it looked at! It would be far more tragic to lose the stone then it would to do without wearing it awhile! I am just glad you caught it and heard it!

I think you can knock it without even noticing.  I remember reading in my little GIA course that a diamond is a 10 on the hardness scale and they can actually wear on the metals.  The GIA recommends that you get them checked every 6 months!!!  I bet we are all guilty of not doing that.  My Mom has even heard that if you lose your big middle stone that you should throw the whole ring away because some insurance companies may not pay you for it if you do not have proof of having the prongs checked every 6 months.

Jen-I am glad to hear you have taken your ring off and put it away until you can have it checked-You definitely don't want to loose the stone! Smiley

GIA-you bring me to a question---if prongs are worn, do you have them re-tipped or the whole basket replaced if possible?  I'm looking at my original ER as I type and it seems time to have the prongs redone!

HI everybody,
there's been a lot of good advice given thus far.
As a few people have said it's possible to knock a ring against something and not even notice it. Especially on the backside.  Like, when you open the door.  Sometimes if the back of the ring bends, even just a little bit, it can cause a slight bit of movement in the prongs.
Good advice to, not to wear the ring to get it checked out.
In terms of getting it checked out, well it's a thornier issue.  You have to make sure that whoever touches the ring is very qualified.
Diamondluvr 's question: it really depends on exactly the type of ring were looking at.  We start with the pretense that only someone really qualified should touch the ring, otherwise the results could be very questionable.  In terms of replacing prongs or an entire basket.  Again, that depends on the ring design.
A highly qualified jeweler can retip the prongs and ensure secure.

I'm very proud of our record in this regard.
Very few of our rings come back with loose stones.

Ok, so I have to find a very qualified jeweller who can deal with rose gold. The only one I'm really happy with here works mainly in platinum, so I'm going to ask around and see if anyone here has a recommendation.

I wear it most days, so as you say David, I've probably knocked the bottom of it on something. If I can't find someone here I'm happy with trusting, is it ok if I get my mother to drop it into you when she's next in NYC? (Usually only a few months between visits - she's way more up for a 6 hour flight than I ever am!).

While she's there, see if you can convince her that diamonds make better gifts for an only child than say, flowers or household goods... Grin

A guy who works in platinum will likely do a good job, tightening the prongs on the rose gold ring. You could show it to them and see what he says.
I'd love to meet your mother, however.  So if you'd rather send it along with her I'd love to take care of it no problem!

We certainly can show your mom some nice alternatives small aquatic pets, agricultural matter and other manner of gift.
We can even send some old wires, switches and electronic gear over for hubby. Evil

How especially thoughtful of you David, to want to enhance Jamie's collection of random rubbish! Great. I'll put it with the small aquatic pets, shall I?  372

Rose gold is a specialty and I respect David for doing such a good job with it...one of my local guys, that I trust to do small jobs, recently told me he does NOT work with rose gold.  I think I would send it to David.  David, is rose gold a little softer than regular gold?   david

hi everybody,
GIAgirl, it's not that pink gold is softer than other gold, it has different characteristics.
For this reason, it is more difficult to work in than yellow gold, but I would not term the difference as softness. That's probably why your local guy would not touch it, we have specialists in pink gold.

The pink gold that we use is just as durable as the yellow gold.
We recently made a man's ring in all pink gold and it came out phenomenal!

Yes, there was no doubt in my mind that Jamie and I certainly see things the same way when it comes to wires and that sort of thing.
I was so taken with your hubby, his attitude was just so wonderful.  He's a pleasure to be around.  In spite of his love of wires-as I can tell he loves you a lot more than wires.
