What's the difference between a Radiant and a Princess cut?
Generally speaking, a princess cut is a diamond with 90 degree corners, like this:

Although princess implies a square to some, a princess cut may be square or rectangular.

A Radiant Cut has clipped corners, like this:

Like Princess Cuts, Radiant Cuts may be either square, or rectangular.

GIA does not use either term (Radiant, or Princess)

GIA's nomenclature for the Princess Cut above would be
"Square Modified Brilliant"

GIA called the Radiant Cut "Cut Cornered Square Modified Brilliant"

What do you think GIA called this one?

Well, to me, it's a radiant with corners.  It doesn't have the typical cross or X often seen in a princess; instead, it has an "eight-pack."

I think GIA would call this "rectangular modified brilliant."

I call it "a really lovely stone that I'd set in a ring with white radiant sides."  Smiley

I second Robin's opinion!  Give us one each and we'll study them intently and let you know what we find out.

"Rectangular modified brilliant"

Or possibly "Rectangular mixed cut" (the top looks suspiciously like an emerald cut)

I also wonder if you turned it with the table facing down, whether it could be called a "Rectangular rose cut"...

But, this stone is so weird... aren't the sides on this one a bit curved, like a cushion?

And, if you went straight, corner to corner, 90 degrees, like a princess?  But, it is not quite square...

Almost like a Flanders Cut, but, with rounded sides and without cut corners...   1087

Ehhhhhhh, they'd probably just say cushion modified brilliant.  But, IS it a cushion shape? I can't tell for sure. Can the edges be curved on a rectangular stone and still have it be just  "rectangle?" Or, does curve automatically equal "cushion?"  1087 BangHead 1087

Good question Trink, because the corners do look a little curvy.

Hi All!!
It's important to remember that GIA uses clinical terminology.
That means they never use names like "Princess" or Radiant"

GIA Called this one "Modified Rectangular Brilliant"

If we were going to shoe-horn this diamond into a shape name, it would be Rectangualr Princess.

Here's the GIA report

Great question Trinkette!

I don't know the answer- but it makes sense that curved edges should make a stone a "Cushion"

We'll have to ask our GIA experts this week!

I guess I need to go back to the books here... Humph!  Wink So, a "rectangle" doesn't necessarily need to be a rectangle afterall?  David, are the sides actually as curved as they seem to be, or, is it just the photos that make them seem so? Gee, for that matter, when does a rectangle become a cushion?  Or a cushion an oval...  1087

The sides definitely have a "bow" to them.

when does a rectangle become a cushion?  Or a cushion an oval...  1087

Great question- it's another case of diamond grading being "subjective"
The "oval- cushion" question is also a good one.
Basically, it's up to the graders- there is NO hard fast rule....

Makes life in the diamond world even more interesting, yes?

Hey, I know!  For FUN, let's send the stone back and pretend it has no GIA report. Do you think it would still be a rectangle? Maybe it would come back a cushion next time...   Evil (I'm sick, I know it).
