Man, do I have to do everything around here?

« on: May 03, 2009, 06:15:15 PM »

Okay--I might be out of the loupe here (excuse the pun)--but has anyone seen this cut before?

Apparently, a conventional emerald cut has 46 facets and a Prince cut has 111 (41 on the crown and 70 on the pavillion).

Just wondering.  Looks alot like a scissor cut.

I think there are a few of these out there, including Criss Cut.

I used to have a link to the patents/registered diamond shapes - and there are hundreds of them, all with slightly different facet patterns.  But I can't find it now, sorry!  It was very interesting.

I've never been overly keen on the vamped up ECs.  I like the still look of the long steps, and in my opinion, the extra facets detract from that.

I think the radiant is an emerald cut variation, it just became popular.

These are pretty, they would have a bit more sparkle than a step cut, I'm guessing. Closer to a brilliant cut, maybe? They're maybe a bit too busy for my taste - I love the simplicity of a good step cut.

I think these look very modern and if I was forced to own one, I'd like it in a sleek platinum setting please!

I saw some cuts I'd never seen before last week too. Duchess, Empress and another one, the name of which I've forgotten, sorry! They are geometric versions of pear, oval and marquise. They're interesting. The man who showed them to me said that they were all cut by one company in NYC and that they aren't cut anymore. I liked them, but not better than I like the more 'organic' shapes. Here's a little photo of some.

Jen--I hear ya with the sleek platinum setting--that would look spectacular.

(I always loved David's 4.42ct Blue sapphire...kinda reminds me of it...without the X in the center.)

Interesting thread! Looks like yet another attempt to re-invent the wheel...

I agree with Jen and Ruby....There's absolutely nothing that looks better than a well cut emerald, or radiant cut, in that style.
The late Mr Henry Grossbard- a friend of ours- invented the radiant cut, back in the 1970's by adding brilliant type faceting onto an emerald cut.
In stark contrast to many of the "boutique" cuts, Mr Grossbard shared the technology- and even invited others to improve on the design- basically, putting it into the public domain. Many of these boutique cuts are designed to sell at a premium.
This makes me feel like the main purpose is not artful, rather a strictly commercial purpose. I've never been a fan of the Crisscut- but the Daussi cushions, which have a lot in common with these type of scissor cuts, seem to be among the nicest to my eye- plus they actually sell for less than many other cushions ( if you buy them from us anyway!)

This is a 5.38ct we recently put in stock ( please excuse the schmutz- it was left there by it's creator to dramatically reduce the price)

That's a beautiful cut. I like cushions and I like step cuts and this is best of both worlds. Plus, it's big enough that you can really admire the faceting.

Lovely!

eta the schmutz would not bother me at all, and I like it's purpose!

Thanks for this post! I'd never heard of or seen a prince cut diamond before, but now I'll definitely keep my eyes peeled for it. It's absolutely gorgeous!

I would try a prince cut...... I like to have different cuts for some reason. I am still waiting for the day a royal asscher gets selected by D for the DBL inventory.
