That seems really nice.  You seem like a really sweet guy.  I am sure she will like anything you pick.

Except for the pink...which I like...and you can send it to me.  Evil

You guys are right, of course!

The only reason it's a disappointment is because I can't really afford to keep it, so since I'll have to sell it, the pure pink would have given more value, that's all... Now to talk David into selling it for me on consignment or something...  Grin

I've got my eye on a couple of the rounds on the rock diamond site, but I've got a little bit of time to figure that out.. probably won't propose until july, maybe august or sept.

What did I tell you, newhope?  You'll have no problems selling the pink . . .

Hey guys! thanks for the kind words!

Still a lot to figure out with everything, finding the right stone, selling this one, learning to salsa dance, you know, all those essentials...

Haha, Well, I think my Gf might have some issues with that one...

Sorry to be so long in reply guys, been dealing with lots of things in life that have had me, uh... busy...

I'm moving out of the country in January, so I've been bogged down with all the preparation.

I'm still dating the same girl, and still waiting for her to be ready to get engaged, so I just haven't done much with either buying a new stone, or selling this one.

I tried to get Appraisals, and got wildly varying numbers, so coming up with what I want to get from the stone will be nigh impossible... so maybe I'll try Ebay, and let the buyers tell me what it's worth. Any thoughts?

Before you do that, I think a private call to David may be worth it... JMHO

I think the risk on eBay is that you have no idea of what the floor/reserve should be, and to be honest probably neither do the buyers.

Thanks OMC!!
I'd have to say that trying to use eBay to figure out what the diamond is worth is an utterly useless exercise.
There's just so much flotsam and jetsam- bogus ads, sellers purportedly offering valuable diamonds for $1 ( while having shill identities to protect these bogus auctions) and eBay is concerned about one thing- generating fees. That means there's little or no interest at all from eBay in cleaning this stuff up.
it also means that you can't glean a lot of usefull info about prices of a pink diamond there.....unless you look at our store......

I know what you mean.. I found the photo attached being sold as a VS1 diamond on ebay...

I don't think Ebay is the best option either, I'm just running out of ideas... I can't give David an idea of what I think the stone is worth, so it's hard for him to do anything (I don't blame him at all BTW)

Actually- I'm sure you want a straight answer.... so I'll give you one......
What you think the stone is worth is really meaningless.

Anyone who's traded in a car knows what I'm talking about.
You took great care of your car, did not drive all that many miles- heck, it's worth a lot!

Then you drive onto a dealers lot. He pulls out a little book.
All the great care you took of your car- ain't really worth squatt!
Your 1983 Yugo is still only worth whatever the little book says- even if you did vacuum it twice a week!!

Seriously- I understand your frustration- but the way you are trying to get answers is unlikely to produce useful results.
You could start with the offer made by the schmuck appraiser who tried to buy it.

If you are going to try and sell privately, you'll get a higher price that you would selling to a dealer- but you'll also have a lot more work selling it.....

Remember too- it's highly unlikely you'll be able to sell the diamond for the price an established dealer might be able to.
A diamond ( or a used car) is worth far less in the hands of a private individual as opposed to an established dealer.

I don't know if you already answered this, but why aren't you sending it to the GIA for a full report?

Good suggestion GL....but the stone has been to GIA- the problem is that the GIA report is not an appraisal and is not all that useful in determing the value of a diamond- especially a fancy colored diamond.

I can't believe that fate has brought us together and you are going to let some "girlfriend" stand in our way of happiness with a fancy brownish pink engagement ring.    1237387oyy519k20r

I do appreciate the straight shooting, it's the lack of straight shooting among all the local folks that has me frustrated. I fully understand the difference in value between a specialty item sold by a professional in the field, and the same thing sold by the guy on the street. I'm an artist or artisan by trade, (depending on my mood mostly) and there are a lot of hacks that I compete with every day, and people still buy my work for more because I've established myself in the field.

Maybe I should throw some numbers out there then and see how you feel about them:

The guy who appraised it, then made two offers wrote the appraisal at $5,700, and offered $7,700. For all I know, that was a good offer, but I didn't trust the guy, and there was no way I was doing business with him (I couldn't now anyways, he was shut down, apparently he was selling cocaine, as well as diamonds!)

Is the stone worth that? (me selling to a dealer) More maybe? Less maybe?

Well.. I guess that would solve the current dilemma  Smiley Whoever wins the oil-wrestling match....  I'll have to think about it... Grin

Well...as far as the wrestling match...I am up for it but I think there should be some rules, like this alleged girlfriend cannot grab onto the huge hump on my back or take advantage of the fact that I have to wear special shoes!  It will have to be a fair fight or I'm not playing!  I am highly allergic to most plant oils, so we might have to use pure animal lard.  (I have found in the past that this works best anyway. )

Let me know when the fight is on, as I will need to wax my face.  They may not let me into the ring with another woman if my beard is grown out.  Geez! I guess society is a tad judgemental about a woman with a little facial hair!

Don't worry, my love, Newhope!  Soon we will be together forever and I shall never take the ring off....well I will when I get my annual bout of finger fungus, but then after the short 2 month course of anti-fungal medication I will be good as new...so for a solid 10 months out of the year the brownish pink will be on my delicate size 12 finger for all the world to see.

Move over GIA Girl!  Evil

Newhope, I don't have any of those challenges, and I'll surely win any ol' wrestling match, as my 10 year old niece is a state champion wrestler!  smackdownguys  She loves it when she makes the boys cry!

Would you like to go out for a coffee, Sweetie?  love7  Oh, and bring the rock, too!  Grin
