An interesting part of grading- is that the grades themselves, only convey half the story.
For example- I remember seeing a D Internally Flawless stone that looked like dog poop. More than one actually.
Since I've seen many I1 stones that I loved, the reasonable conclusion is that some of the I1's I've seen were nicer than other Internally Flawless stones I've seen.

By no means am I saying- go out and buy I1 diamonds.
A fair percentage of correctly graded I1 diamonds possess imperfections large enough to actually block a fair amount of light - especially if they are in a specific orientation.

The stone below was graded I2 by GIA.

The reason the orientation is important can be demonstrated with a piece of paper like this:
If we hold the paper one way, we can only see the paper.
Orient it differently, and you can hardly see the paper.

And I'll bet IRL, once this puppy is set, it won't let you see the huge booger you're about to show us, right, D?   Evil

I see the booger but in that photo, it's really not all that noticeable. Does it compromise the integrity of the stone? Is that an issue with I2 diamonds or not? It is a lovely cut and shape. I love longitude in a radiant. i would be sorely tempted by this diamond and I have to say I did not ever think there'd be an I2 I felt that way about in my life.

Here's a shot outlining the rather large feather that caused GIA to grade the diamond I2. It's oriented rather like the piece of paper that allows us to see the monitor.
The red arrows point out some reflection of the feather oj the other side of the diamond.
It's a brand new GIA- the cutter made a mistake, as he only wanted a color report, but an assistant mistakenly asked for a full GIA report when submitting.
The cut is really nice.
We have not decided to buy it, but we're still considering it.

Great question WM- durability can be a large issue on an I2. Certainly something to consider before purchasing.
This feather is wholly contained within the diamond and poses no durability risks.

i actually like this diamond....flaw and all. and being an I2, it would probably be quite inexpensive?

I think it is the finest I2 I've ever seen. It is drop dead gorgeous. Even in these photos I don't think the I2 flaw shows all that much. How does it look in person, D? I bet that won't last one week in our store. Who's with me on that one?

I'm right behind you, Meb Wistress.  Put that fella in a bezel and Poof! Instant lemon ice, and it would proably hide that booger a bit more.  Not that it would be all that visible to my naked eye, in the first place.  Cool

Buttery. That's an ideal description. It is. And just as delicious.
