Hi ALL! Time for our newest CONTEST!!! The winner gets a pair of 1/4ct TW Natural Yellow Princess Cut Diamond Studs in 18kt Yellow Gold ( $499 on the site).

The video and photos were shot today, July 25 2007.
ABOUT DIAMOND CUTTING This is a rough diamond, as it came out of the ground.

We will put this diamond into the hands of a master diamond cutter. This guy's a genius. He will put it on diamond cutting wheels, and start polishing

The photo above shows a cutting wheel. Before we get the diamond all dirty, we use the most modern technology to asses the rough diamond. We need to finish up with the most beautiful diamond because that's going to bring the highest price. As the same time we have to save as much of the original weight as we can- after all diamonds are sold by weight. A very delicate balance to achieve indeed. SO we use all the latest technology, but...... As great as the technology is, none of the diamonds I know give a hoot about a machine.
Looking at this rough diamond, please notice that it's translucent.
That means that our best guesses - made while looking at the diamond now , might not be correct.
As the cutter starts polishing away the rough- we'll get an even clearer picture of what is best.
for example, I can see a few spots- of course if you could plan the diamond so that those spots were part of the diamond you polished off, that would be a good thing. Sometimes we can't see the imperfection till we actually get further into the cutting- requiring further "re-plotting" More on the actual cutting as we go along in the process.
THE CONTEST
AS the video shows, contestants will need to guess the weight of the polished diamond we get out of this 5.28carat rough
Contestants will need to also guess what shape the diamond will be cut into.
The third part of the guess: What color will GIA call the finished gem?
The winner is the one who gets the first part right.
The second is to be used in the event of a tie. Say there's multiple winners on the weight- and no one- or multiple contestants- guess the shape correctly. In that event the person who's initial answer was posted first wins. The third part is just for fun.......
AS in our last contest, each contestant will be granted 2 guesses.
A word about the "two guess" system.....
My thought was that the first guess could actually be used as a.....tool?? You know, like raising a flag to see which way the wind's blowing..... I mean, I'd have expected a lot of folks to wait till just before the end to place their second guess.... This would give them the advantage of seeing everyone else's first guess...... If we did use this system, it would also allow us the possibility of showing the diamond part way, if that's possible- without giving unfair advantage to those who had already expended their only guess..... it would probably mean a lot of last minute second guessing- but that's ok. We'll plan the end as we get closer so that everyone will have a chance to place their final guess.
In any event, this contest will run for at least one month. The cutter needs time to do their job properly. We will announce the end date of the contest within 30 days- it should be no later than September 19. RULES 1) Open to members of the forum only. If you'd like to join for the purpose of entering, so be it. New members are welcome too. 2) If two ( or more) contestants guess the exact total weight, the contestant guessing the correct shape wins. If that does not break the tie, the contestant who made the first guess takes them. 3) No editing of posts containing a guess 4) void where prohibited 5) if the winner is outside the US, shipping charges may apply 6) not open to DBL/CDI employees 7) these rules are subject to change if I screwed the pooch and forgot something vital
