Ha, I meant great shot GL, agree with Trink.  And I think I need to be adding that round to the Dibbs thread.  It looks huge for a .80, do you know the mm size?

Thanks guys!  For some more idea about perspective and how the halos affect the center:

- The round doesn't have a GIA report, but I had it appraised years back and they gave it a G VS2.  Don't know for sure, but it is very white and eye clean.  Anyway, it measures somewhere around 5.8mm in diameter.

- The middle ring has a Fancy Deep Brownish Yellow cushion center that measures somewhere around 6.8mm sq.  It was 2.08 cts or so.  I sold it when I upgraded to my current 2.83 Y-Z radiant, for which I also traded in my...

- HRH ring on the bottom, which is a 1.58(?) ct Fancy Light Yellow square radiant that measures just over 6.5mm sq.  In that halo the diamond sits up higher in its prongs than the round .80, which is bezeled.  Both halos really show off the centers beautifully.  That lovely ring now resides with Mikla.

Now I guess I need a new picture with my three current rings - the round one pictured on top here, the Eagle, and my 1.07 ct EC in its pink halo.  The EC is in a totally different type and color of halo and it also looks much much larger than I think one would guess it really is.

Did I mention I am really big fan of halos???

So give it up, GL.  The last pic was great, especially now we have the relatives sizes, colors, and clarities to help balance out the visual.  I think we'd all appreciate seeing the new trio in a similar shot with similar specs  - and give SaoriViola another excellent comparative shot with different settings.

I was fascinated by how the settings can change the overall perception of the size of a stone.

OK, it has been over a month since ah2b asked me to do this, but here is a new picture of my 3 current DBL rings. The details are:

1. .80 G RB in white diamond halo - center measures about 5.8mm
2. 1.07 F EC in pink diamond halo - center measures about 6.9mm x 5.8mm
3. 2.84 Y-Z radiant with .56 D trills - center measures about 7.5mm x 7.5mm (in defense of this diamond, it is very bright and shiny in person. yet always photographs cloudy.  Not sure if it has fluor - could that be the cause?  Anyone?)

Have you made a decision Saori?

Wow!  Great collection GL, and thanks for all the stats, that's mucho helpful.  I was talking with my MIL yesterday, and she's back to the possibility of trilliant sides.  I know she's always liked the look of them, but when she tried on a three stone ring the last time we went out, she was not as excited about that as the ring with all the pave and a halo, so i'm stumped!  i think we should just take a trip up to new york and meet with david and see the diamond in person and try on all his wonderful stock!  Smiley  i think that's what i'm going to start moving for....

Man, do I have to do everything around here?

« Reply #57 on: May 02, 2010, 06:11:55 PM »

Good question GL.

I remember that with DW's first yellow. She steamed it with her Jet steamer and it was still cloudy. The other diamonds, including her brown, always come out super sparkly.

Here's a picture to show you. This was taken after a cleaning.  I don't mean to thread jack here, but should yellows be cleaned differently D? I know that ultrasonic cleaners shouldn't be used because of the melee--right?

We could never get the yellow as "clear" as the first time we removed it from the DBL box.

Duh! I do know it is 2.83.  Wishful thinking typo I guess....

Hmmm, maybe it is because the head of the ring has a closed bottom.  I clean it pretty regularly, but maybe there is some build up.  Will have to go over to visit the jewelry cleaning thread.  It is such a gorgeous diamond. Thanks for posting that photo D!

Saori, whatever your MIL picks will be fabulous!

is that true about the ultrasonic?  i've had my engagement ring for over two years and have cleaned it in the ultrasonic cleaner probably once a week or more since then.  once, about 8 months ago or so i noticed one of the micropave stones had come a little loose so i took it to a local jeweler to secure it.  other than that i've never had any problems.

It's true, but if you have the stones checked fairly regularly I wouldn't worry overmuch (and replacing one or two 1mm stones is hardly going to break the bank either).

Ultrasonic cleaning works by using water as a brush moving very quickly (25-40,000 times/second), so it's not surprising that after many millions of brush strokes stones which are held in place by a tiny prong, covering a fraction of a millimeter, can work themselves loose.

Sorry I am tardy to the party.  I like the split shank/halo ring.  I think that would make it pop.  That is a fabulous stone btw.

I like them both almost equally.  I have recently decided that I want traps for my stone some day so I am not sure if my wants are influencing my decision.  I just like the idea of a slightly wider shank whre the traps flow right into it if that makes sense.

Either will be lovely though.

good point squiggly, my MIL has shorter fingers and so has wanted a narrower band which i think is most flattering for her, so she's concerned the traps make the band too thick.  it's also one of the reasons she focused on trilliant sides, but also 'cause she really likes them.
so she was up late last night looking at styles, if it were traps, what do you guys think of this?

I really like both traps and trills and think that the pave' is lovely on a 3 stone ring.

I previously owned a DBL yellow radiant and trill ring and it was really gorgeous in person-really fluid lines and I probably wouldn't have chose trills had I only seen them in a layout as above.

I may have to change my vote, Saori.  If your MIL prefers the trills and finds a narrow band more flattering, then absolutely do the trills.  She's the one who has to love it.

As for the question to pave or not to pave - I'm useless.  I like both plain and paveed.  I'd ask David about that with the trills, tho.

Trills. Plain band. Or at least, that's what I'd do.

For what your MIL would want, I would go with trills and plain thin shank.

Funny thing is I have short fingers, but I am wanting a wider band.  Probably because my current anniversary band is 3mm or so and I want something similar in width in the future.
